Fort Williams & Mudlick Creek

Fort Williams was the home-turned-fortification of Patriot Col. James Williams, who helped lead the Patriots to victory at Musgrove Mill. Williams was later killed at Kings Mountain. Two battles took place herre.

Fort Williams: December 31, 1780

Following the defeat of Georgia Loyalist milita at Hammond’s Old Store, SC Patriot militia Col. Joseph Hayes was sent to capture Fort Williams with help from SC Continental military. However, Loyalist Brig. Gen. Robert Cunningham had been forewarned and began overnight evacuations. When they arrived, most Loyalist forces had already evacuated, and the remaining forces were chased into the woods. The Patriots burned the fort and all remaining supplies.

Loyalist forces later re-occupied Fort Williams, from which they forayed into the surrounding areas, following the departure of the main American army from SC. Outnumbered Patriot militia led by Col. Benjamin Roebuck and Lt. Col. Henry White. Their creativity resulted in a victory for the Patriots: They drew the Tory forces out into an ambush. Roebuck was wounded and captured, so this is also known as Roebuck’s defeat.

Historical markers for both Fort Williams and Mudlick Creek are located at Hayes Station, 455 Williams Rd in Clinton. Parking is available in a gravel by the historical kiosk.

Safety Note: The Hayes Station monument site, located a short walk away from the parking lot, is on a one-acre parcel surrounded by a private hunt club. Although hunters are aware of the monument site, it is imperative that you do not wander onto the hunting grounds. DO NOT visit this site during deer season: October 1 - January 1.
