According to Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church tradition, early in the Revolutionary War, opposing forces found themselves on either side of this spring, both facing a greater enemy - an outbreak of smallpox. A truce was arranged to allow the sick access the springwater, and soldiers laid down their weapons for a brief period of peace. Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church was founded in 1785 and named after the spring on its property.
